Report on the Recent Trade Mission to Liberia Meeting

Held at the Embassy in London on June 27

The recent trade mission to Liberia meeting, held on June 27 at the Embassy in London, was a significant gathering that brought together key stakeholders including investors, dignitaries from the Liberian embassy, and representatives from the UK government. The primary focus of the meeting was to foster discussions and collaboration aimed at strengthening business ties and exploring investment opportunities in Liberia.

The meeting was well attended by stakeholders, potential investors, business owners, would-be investors, ULOUK and other dignitaries.

It was facilitated by H.E Gurly Gibson Schwarz, Ambassador, Mr. Simon Tooth, Head, West Africa team FCDO and Cllr. Alpha Collins, Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood

Introductory Remarks:

The meeting began with an introduction, welcome remarks, and an overview by Ambassador H.E. Gurly Gibson Schwarz, who highlighted the significance of the trade mission and its potential positive impacts on both nations.

Mr. Simon Tooth from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) discussed the benefits of the trade mission for British businesses. He pointed out the significant commercial opportunities and strategic advantages of investing in Liberia.

Purpose and Expected Outcomes

Cllr. Alpha Collins, Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council, elaborated on the purpose and expected outcomes of the trade mission. He emphasized the goals of enhancing bilateral trade, forming sustainable business partnerships, and promoting economic development in Liberia.

Regarding the travel arrangement and possible support for participants, Ms. Sarah Southwell provided details on the travel package for the mission. She announced a subsidized travel package for all attendees, which includes reduced ticket prices, hotel accommodations, and visa fees. Free local travel will be provided for all delegates whose agendas align with the mission’s purpose.

For his part, Mr. Albert Jaja, Minister Counsellor for Press and Public Affairs, outlined the itinerary and detailed the planned meetings with Government of Liberia (GOL) officials upon the team’s arrival in Liberia.

Representatives from various sectors shared insights and remarks, highlighting the diverse opportunities in Liberia:

  • Agriculture: Emphasized the potential for growth in farming and agribusiness, with opportunities for investment and development.
  • Information Technology (IT): Discussed the burgeoning tech scene and opportunities for collaboration and investment in digital infrastructure.
  • Education: Highlighted the importance of investing in the educational sector to develop a skilled workforce.
  • Pharmacy and Health Sector: Addressed the need for investments in healthcare infrastructure and pharmaceutical services to improve health outcomes.
  • Banking: Focused on the financial sector’s role in supporting economic growth through improved banking services and financial inclusion.
  • Trade: Emphasized the potential for expanding trade relations and creating new markets for goods and services.
  • Construction: Discussed opportunities in infrastructure development, including building projects and urban development initiatives.

Dr. Emmanuel Lah, the Secretary General for ULOUK, also addressed the attendees, highlighting the significance of the meeting for the youth and the future of Liberia. He reiterated the new government’s dedication to creating a conducive environment for investment and enhancing the nation’s judicial framework:

“As young people of Liberia, this meeting is about our future, and we will do everything to support it. The new government is doing everything in its power to make sure Liberia has a stable, peaceful, and solid business climate for investment. The judiciary system is being strengthened to give fair judgment for all.”

Dr. Lah’s message emphasized the government’s proactive steps in ensuring a stable and fair business environment, which is critical for attracting and retaining investors and suggested a database be setup for ULOUK to signpost investors to members for collaboration.

President Anthony Kollie also conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the assembly of influential stakeholders at this crucial meeting. He emphasized the unwavering support of the Liberian community (ULOUK) towards the trade initiative, stating:

“Thank you for this very important gathering. As always, ULOUK is highly supportive of this initiative and will be fully represented at the Trade Mission.”

His message underscored the collective commitment of the Liberian community to back the ambassador’s efforts in promoting Liberia as a viable and attractive destination for investment.
